Designing the Battleborn Faction Logos

Each of the factions in Battleborn has its own unique logo. While we all know these iconic logos by now, there weren't the only icons that were designed. Let's have a look at the other icons that were on the table.

Alternative Battleborn Faction Icons

Michael Paskar who is an artist /illustrator was tasked with designing the Battleborn faction logos.  He was able to share some of his work on Battleborn. So let’s have a look at the alternative versions he came up with for each of the Battleborn factions.

Eldrid Logo Concepts

You can see the nature aspects surface in these designs. A lot of soft curves to put emphasis on the love and peace aspect of this faction. There are tree-like designs as these are commonly used to represent nature and growth. Growth is something the Eldrid stands for. I think the 3rd design does a good job by showing the roots of a tree and having somewhat of a sun shape next to it. As trees need sunlight in order to grow. The other flower and seed designs are also nicely done.  As you can see the 4th design is almost similar to the final design.

Jennerit Logo Concepts

Opposite to the Eldrid logo designs, the Jennerit logos are very hard. As the faction description mentioned, the Jennerit rule by force. They needed a powerful logo, so you got strong corners. I think the initial character design of Rath also had some influence on the shape of the logo. When Gearbox was brainstorming on the Battleborn heroes, one of the ideas was to have a vampire samurai. Art director, Scott Kester,  managed to nail Rath’s design later that day which also included his skill set. The style of VFX for the Catalytic Smash are somewhat represented in these icons.

LLC Logo Concepts

LLC stands for Last Light Consortium. The “last light” idea can be seen in a few designs as there are rays of sunlight coming from behind a planet or moon. This eventually also made it over to the final design. There are 2 designs that cleverly stack the letters L L C to create a logo. I also like the compass icon as the LLC are also explorers (of new technology). The final 2 logos give me the impression of a wormhole or something. I’m not sure what the intention was with this vortex design.

Peacekeepers Logo Concepts

Back at Gamescom 2015, I was lucky to be invited to a presentation of Battleborn. Randy Pitchford joked that the Peacekeepers were basically the USA. This does reflect in the logo designs as America is known for its stars and eagle. Also, the military badge designs reflect what the faction is all about. The 3rd design I could see as a template for the LLC, it would have to drop the sword but it shouts science at me. The 5th logo design also works very well for me. It shows me they will stand their ground and the tower in the back also is a small reference to the chess pieces since some UPR characters have a chess icon on their outfit.

Rogue Logo Concepts

The Rogues were first described as the space pirates of Battleborn during the cooperative gameplay demonstration. How can’t you do skulls if you are dealing with pirates?  Personally, I don’t like these designs and am very happy with the final icon that ended up in the game. I could see the 3rd one being used on a chemical bottle as a warning sign of it being lethal.
