2024 could become “The Year of Borderlands” because there is a lot of stuff in the development. There is a lot of demand for the “Next Big One” but what can we realistically expect from the Borderlands franchise this coming year?
Table of contents
The Hunt
2024 starts off with “The Hunt”. This community-led event is supported by Gearbox Entertainment and 2K Games. Players will collect loot in this Borderlands 2 Scavenger Run and will try to accumulate as many points in the least amount of time.
The Hunt is a charity event that raises money and awareness for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and is open to anyone who wants to participate.
The Hunt is being held from February 2nd to February 11th, 2024.
Borderlands: Debt or Alive
One of the first official things we will see in 2024 is Borderlands: Debt or Alive. This is a novel and is written by Anthony Burch, who also was the lead writer of Borderlands 2. This all-new story takes directly place after the events of the Original Tales From The Borderlands that Anthony helped write. The story features Fiona and Sasha and will address the content of the Vault and how the heroes dealt with that.
Borderlands Debt or Alive is set to be released in March June 2024. You can order a copy from Amazon now.
Borderlands: Echovision
Borderlands EchoVision Live is a collaboration between Gearbox Entertainment and Genvid Entertainment. Together they are working on a Borderlands interactive streaming series where 8 wannabe Vault Hunters fork over their hard-earned cash for a safely guided tour of Eden-6. Their experience containing all the excitement with none of the dangers takes a different route.
Not a lot of information other than the synopsis has been released but looking at the descriptions, I’m getting an interactive Tales From the Borderlands vibe but tailored to a massive online audience.
Borderlands EchoVision Live was announced at Comic-Con (July) 2023 but no official release date has been given out. It’s likely that we can experience this interactive streaming series in 2024.
Borderlands Movie
The Borderlands Movie has been in development for several years and has received a release date. On August 9, 2024, we can finally experience the full movie in theaters but leading up to that event there will likely be some teaser trailers for the movie.
The Borderlands Movie isn’t a 1-for-1 retelling of the games but does draw inspiration from its source material. It’s kinda how Marvel keeps their cinematic universe separate from the comics but honors their fans.
Borderlands 4
There have been hints that Borderlands 4 is in development, however, since there hasn’t been an official announcement or release date, it is currently unknown if Borderlands 4 will really be released in 2024.
Some folks are speculating that the Borderlands movie can be a great tool to get more people to play the games. That’s definitely true but other than wish fulfillment there isn’t any solid evidence to confirm this. Getting a new Borderlands game 5 years after the release of Borderlands 3 would be great.
Borderlands Merch
You could count the Debt or Alive Book as Merch but separate from that I think the Borderlands Movie will spark a ton of new merchandise. If Borderlands 4 happens there will be an avalanche of merch to delve into.
I don’t expect EchoVision Live to spark much interest in this department but who knows it might just be a sleeper hit. Personally, I don’t have high expectations from EchoVision Live as the interest in New Tales From the Borderlands isn’t very high.
Echoes From The Borderlands Season 2
I really enjoyed Echoes From The Borderlands, however, looking at the YouTube numbers the podcast wasn’t a smash hit amongst the fanbase. That said, I’m still hopeful we will get a second season. I think there is still a lot they can do with it. I’m sure they are gathering feedback and are looking into ways how they can be relevant, cross-promote, and serve an audience. Season 1 was created as one batch, therefore, they aren’t able to iterate each week with the release of a new episode so we will see some adjustments in the second season.
Season 2 could talks about the releases mentioned above and hype up the excitement for those projects. Randy Pitchford could talk more indepth about assisting on the movie.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2
While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has its roots in the Borderlands franchise, Gearbox Software sees this new IP as its own franchise. Therefore, technically Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands doesn’t fall under the “What to expect from Borderlands in 2024” but not everyone sees it that way.
There are new Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands experiences are in development but you shouldn’t expect them in 2024 since the first game released in 2022 and Gearbox Software will be focusing on Borderlands 4. I would expect TTWL2 to be released in 2026.
Post-Launch Support + Content
The Borderlands Community would love to see another DLC for Borderlands 3, similar to what Gearbox Software did with the Commander Lilith DLC for Borderlands 2. I thought it was crazy that they made a DLC leading up to the events of the upcoming game. It would be great if this becomes a tradition but I’m not expecting them to do that again.
- Borderlands 3 on the Nintendo Switch might receive another patch to fix a couple of issues.
- We will see SHiFT Codes for Golden Keys in BL2, BLTPS, BL3, and TTWL throughout the year.
Lorie Giglio
A soundtrack would be nice. I love the variety of music styles.
