Boss Description
Mouthpiece is the first real ‘Boss’ in Borderlands 3 as Shiv is pretty much just a stronger enemy to wrap up the tutorial. You encounter Mouthpiece during the 3rd story mission, Cult Following, where you go to the Holy Broadcast Center. He’s the dubstep boss with all the speakers.
Mouthpiece is located in Ascension Bluff on the planet Pandora. You encounter him in the Holy Broadcast Center.
You can farm Mouthpiece for these legendary weapons as it is the dedicated loot source for these items. Mouthpiece has a ~18% legendary drop chance.
Mouthpiece can also drop the ‘Killing-Word’ this is a unique COV Pistol that shoots sound waves. Another unique drop is the ECHO-2 a Tediore grenade with a very high damage output and a 3-second fuse time. Be aware of your Autosell settings if you want these unique non-legendary items.
How to Defeat Mouthpiece
Mouthpiece is the first boss in the game that new players struggle with as this boss fight introduces new mechanics. You will encounter immunity phases and arena hazards but even while things seem chaotic there is an attack pattern to this encounter that you can follow.
Mouthpiece has a single red health bar. This makes him weak against regular and fire bullets. Avoid using Shock and Corrosive weapons as these deal less damage to red health bars (here is more info about elemental effectiveness). The boss will protect himself with his shield, therefore, you need to attack him from the sides or whenever he moves his shield out of the way. You can use your offhand melee to punch an enemy’s shield out of the way.
Mouthpiece’s health bar is divided into 3 segments and when you drain one of these segments it will trigger an immunity phase. The boss’s health bar will be locked as it turns grey during these moments. Mouthpiece will start taunting you, however, this is a distraction. Look at the floor and see which section of the arena is lighting up. You will also hear the speakers charging up and will explode when they reach their limit, however, they only explode in the area where the neon floor tiles light up.
There are a bunch of Tinks in the arena during this boss fight and while they look like a treat, they are actually there to save your life. Tinks will attack you when you get close to them but they are actually raving to the music. Keep a few Tinks alive because that way you can score a Second Wind whenever you go down.
