Borderlands Crossplay 2021 Announced
During PAX Online Gearbox Software and 2K Games mentioned that they are still working on Crossplay for Borderlands 3 and that this feature is scheduled to release in 2021. And during Episode 8 of the Borderlands Show, GBX Dev Graeme Timmins mentions they are still committed to bringing this feature to the community. More details about this functionality will be released in the (near) future.
Borderlands 3 Cross-Platform PC Details
Gearbox Software and their partners are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3, however, it will not be available at launch. Randy couldn’t confirm which platforms will be part of their cross-play endeavors. That said, they want to bring the feature to as many platforms as they can. At least, that is what was mentioned in 2019 when Borderlands 3 was about to be released.
Before Borderlands 3 got announced you could spot a cross-play logo on the Borderlands 3 pre-order page in the Xbox Store. EPIC Games has been at the forefront of crossplay with their game Fortnite. While not everyone may like the exclusivity deal with the EPIC Games Store, this might just be one of those cool features that will help the game in the long run. Although we haven’t seen anything from that up to this point.
There is an in-game mail system in Borderlands 3 that allows you to send items to your friends. While you cannot directly play with your friends on other platforms it is possible to send them loot. By using Gearbox’s own SHiFT system items can be transferred from 1 player to another. As SHiFT continues to evolve, I can see Gearbox use this tech to make cross-play a reality.
Borderlands 3 Cross-Platform PC Details
If you are going to play Borderlands 3 on PC you don’t have to worry about the EPIC exclusivity deal. All the players can matchmake with each other regardless of the store they used. This news comes from EPIC CEO, Tim Sweeney, on twitter .
How will cross-play work on PC between Steam and the Epic Games Store?
Borderlands 3 supports PC Cross-Play between Steam and the Epic Games Store with the power of SHiFT Matchmaking. When launching Borderlands 3 for the first time on Steam, and on Epic after installing a new patch, you’ll be greeted by a “PC Cross-Play” screen and the option to enable or disable this feature. A pre-existing SHiFT account is not required to participate in Cross-Play.
Enabling PC Cross-Play lets you join game sessions with players on Steam or Epic Game Store through Matchmaking and Game Invites. Disabling this feature will restrict you to playing with other people on the same PC platform as you. You can choose to enable or disable this feature at any time via the Options menu, under the General section of the Network & Social menu.
Regardless of whether you chose to enable or disable PC Cross-Play, you’ll be prompted to set a PC Cross-Play Display Name, which is required for the new SHiFT Matchmaking functionality. Your PC Cross-Play Display Name must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a unique name not already in use by another Borderlands 3 player
- Must be between 3-16 characters long
- Must start with a letter, and is limited to a-z, A-Z, 0-9, or non-consecutive underscore, hyphen, or period/full-stop characters
You can change your display name on your personal account page on the SHiFT website, or in Borderlands 3 via the Social menu option from the main menu or pause menu. Simply click Social, switch to the SHiFT tab, and change your PC Cross-Play Display Name in the Account Details section.
Will Borderlands 3 on PC have crossplay with consoles?
Not at this time, however, GBX is still committed to bringing cross-play to the players.
With the upcoming Celebration of Togetherness, a lot of people speculated that it would be the announcement for cross-play. Except that is not the case according to Gearbox Software’s president Randy Pitchford. On Twitter, he responded to the community speculation. Randy mentioned that the Celebration of Togetherness event will be awesome and that they will talk about cross-play later.
