Borderlands 3 DLC 2 Review
Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles is an AMAZING DLC. While the title of this story campaign add-on focuses on the marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock, it has a lot more to offer.
Yes, it uses the wedding as a starting point and that story gets a conclusion. But throughout the DLC you are captivated by this spoopy adventure.
Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles is Gearbox’s take on the Lovecraft genre. The comical horror fits Borderlands. During your journey, you discover how far people are willing to go for our loved ones.
‘Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles’ delivers a great experience with its new locations, memorable characters, and enemies. I definitely recommend this story campaign add-on.
The Wedding of Wainwright and Hammerlock
In the main story campaign of Borderlands 3, you could already notice the bond between Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs. The next step in their lives got revealed during the credits when you finished the main story campaign. As a sketch of Wainright proposing to Hammerlock was shown during the credits.
Now in the second story campaign add-on, “Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles”, you get to be part of their wedding. However, not everything goes as planned. Once you made your way to the new planet, Xylourgos, you quickly get introduced to the wedding planner as she crashlands moments after your arrival.
If you played Borderlands 2, you will recognize Gaige as the playable Mechromancer class. As you will travel together to the Lodge to meet up with the rest of the guests. You notice this giant monster that has infested itself over the planet.
However, that’s not the only creepy thing in this DLC. The owner of the Lodge also sets the mood of this story campaign add-on and that continues as you make your way through the town Cursehaven.
The DLC really takes a turn once you checked out the wedding location and you stumble upon this ceremony by this cult that worships the giant monster. With a sinister chant, they claim the heart of the fallen monster still beats. The background music/ambient throughout the DLC is on point and set the mood for the events. And the events of this ceremony stand in the way of the wedding.
Now it’s up to you to restore that “happily ever after”.
Locations
The locations in this DLC look great and there is a good variety of them. It mainly takes place in a snowy environment but that’s what you get when you visit an icy planet. However, Gearbox mixes it up with a spooky town that leads up to this haunted mansion. A forest near the caves that you both get to visit before you climb the mountains.
The haunted mansion is where everything comes together. This is when I started to question if Borderlands secretly became a horror game. I was starting to expect jump scares that were going to freak me out. The location is creepy, the theme of the DLC is creepy, and the creepy dialogue over the Echonet sets the mood.
Enemies and Bosses
The enemies in ‘Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles’ are great. The cult followers are on the level of Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep from Borderlands 2. In case you don’t know what I mean by that. It’s super good especially since I was kinda expecting reskins of known enemies that are already in the game.
The enemies in Moxxi’s Heist on the Handsome Jackpot were primarily loader bots that we also encountered in Borderlands 2. So while we didn’t have those in the main game, it was falling back on previous games. Therefore, I was kinda expecting ‘Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt’. However, that wasn’t the case and Gearbox really stepped up!
The wildlife creatures are also very good. You got wolf-like animals that get a shield if you don’t eliminate them quickly enough. Then there are armored creatures that spawn additional enemies. All new enemies with different behaviors make the combat feel fresh. I LOVE IT!
There were a few bosses that felt like badass enemies with a bit more health. It’s a Borderlands game, so we always are getting those but there are bosses that really shined. They had more elaborate mechanics and multiple phases.
I really enjoyed the boss fight that forced you to climb up these rocks and destroy the shards that powered up the boss. Even though I died a few times during that fight, I liked the challenge as well as the spectacle.
New Weapons
With every DLC you can expect new gear and with Guns, LOVE, and Tentacles that doesn’t change. There are a few items that are very good and even challenge the current meta. I’ll probably do a best of DLC2 weapon guide soonish. Throughout the main quest, I was rocking the Gatlin’ Clairvoyance. It’s a full-auto cryo Jakobs assault rifle that paired well with my Zane build.
Conclusion
Well if it wasn’t obvious from the review. Guns, Love, and Tentacles is a very enjoyable experience with a great theme. Also, you will be getting one of the best side-missions ever with this DLC. I definitely recommend you pick it up!
