Update – May 12th
A spokesperson from Walmart Canada said to Motherboard that the titles are “speculative”. This falls in line with what I mentioned before. Someone is proactively adding upcoming games to the back end. Because few of the games that were “leaked” have been rumored for a little while.
“Walmart experienced a technical glitch that allowed certain items to be posted to our website for a short period of time,” Anika Malik, director of corporate affairs for Walmart Canada, told Motherboard in an email. “The items posted were speculative in nature and only game publishers can confirm the announcement of a release. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Like the gaming community, Walmart looks forward with anticipation to those announcements. – Walmart Canada
However after the listing of these games the Rage Twitter account did respond to Walmart. Since then the Bethesda social media has also been actively posting strange images with the same pinkish color. This looks like a publisher is capitalizing on the momentum and is pushing out some early teases.
Another interesting thing is that Gearbox President, Randy Pitchford, responded to my poll if the Walmart leak is true.
Original Article May 10
On May 9th Walmart Canada listed several unannounced games on their website. Among these leaked games is the next installment of the Borderlands series, Borderlands 3. While the games were just briefly visible on the site of course everyone had to check it and make screen captures from it. It isn’t a secret that the next Borderlands is in development. However, during a PAX Panel the Gearbox President, Randy Pitchford, did mention that they were not sure if they would call it Borderlands 3. This listing on Walmart Canada suggests otherwise. However it also mentions another thing that is just completely wrong. Because if we check out who the developer is it mentions EA. Well, that can’t be right. I do consider the listing on the Walmart site to be a placeholder. Therefore not everything has to be correct. Webshops always put up a fictional release date on their site. Walmart added December 31st, 2018 as the Borderlands 3 release date. However, since there hasn’t been an official announcement for the game we can only speculate about the Borderlands 3 release window.
These leaks are probably done by someone who is proactively adding upcoming games to the back-end of the site but accidentally posted them as public. While the addition of Borderlands 3 doesn’t provide us with any new information and might even be considered fake due to the errors. There is this thing with Rage 2 that gives this all some more credibility. The official Rage social media channel did pick up on the leak and customized its channel to the placeholder image. On the other spectrum, we have Forza Horizon 5 being among the games that were listed. However, Forza Horizon 4 isn’t even a thing. Let me know what you think of this leak in the comments below. I’ll be covering this game extensively so check back from time to time for more updates.
