Update Aug 31, 2023: Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch got announced.
Update Jan 24, 2021: Borderlands legendary collection for the Nintendo Switch got announced. This bundle contains Borderlands GOTY, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands the Pre-Sequel including all the DLC. This could be a sign of 2K Games testing the waters to see if the demand for a Borderlands 3 port for the Nintendo Switch is high enough.
Never Say Never
During episode 1 of the Borderlands Show, Greg Miller asked if any games in the series would come to the Nintendo platform. Paul Sage who is the creative director on Borderlands 3 replied with “Never say never.”
Stopped Talking
Before Borderlands 3 officially got announced, Randy Pitchford was already talking a bit about the game. In one of his tweets, Randy said that they were talking with Nintendo about bringing the game to Nintendo Switch. However, for some reason, they stopped talking.
Switch Port Possible?
Borderlands 3 is designed with the specs of the Xbox One and PS4 in mind. The Nintendo Switch’s performance doesn’t match up with those gaming platforms. Therefore the game would need to be adjusted to be able to run on Nintendo’s System. There are a lot of awesome games that have successfully been ported to the Switch, like Doom and The Witcher. The question is optimization. How much of a game do you have when porting Borderlands 3 to the Switch? In the past, Sony did make a Borderlands 2 port possible for the PSVita. While it was a great accomplishment it wasn’t the best Borderlands 2 experience.
Optimistic Publishing Partner
2K Games is the exclusive publisher for the Borderlands franchise and they are very optimistic about the Nintendo Switch. Since the successful release of Civilization on the Switch they have had an eye-opening experience and since then been releasing more and more games for the system. If 2K Games wants Borderlands 3 to be available on the Switch they can make the call. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they ported Borderlands 2 to the Switch.
