Gearbox Software and 2K Games have hidden a secret message in their Borderlands 4 teaser trailer and the community has managed to decipher the code revealing mysterious clues. In the trailer, we see where Lilith teleported the moon to and what kind of impact it has but as this spectacle concludes a few glitching images get flashed onto the screen.
There are 2 hidden messages shown at the end of the trailer, however, they are written using alien symbols. Fans speculate that it is Eridian writing as that’s the vibe we get from the teaser trailer itself.
The Borderlands community immediately started working on cracking the code and because the symbols correspond with the letters of our own alphabet Lazy_Data and DrZed on Twitter managed to reveal cryptic messages.

The first message that got decoded is actually the second text that shows during the Borderlands 4 teaser trailer but it translates to “BREAK FREE”. The double E in the second word helped narrow down the possibilities. You can then take those findings to the first word as the R and E overlap. Solving these words helps us solve the other message.
Borderlands 4: He is Watching
The other message is decoded by using the letters from the first solution and a process of elimination as there are just so few 2-letter words that make sense in a sentence. Knowing the Borderlands lore helps steer the direction but as soon as the community had it figured out, the solution was shared by Gearbox Software’s community manager.
The Meaning of the Deciphered Message
The full decoded message translates to; HE IS WATCHING – BREAK FREE.
We got introduced to the Watcher at the end of Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, an Edidian Guardian who warned us that we needed all the Vault Hunters we had because war was coming.
The community speculates that The Watcher is still looking over us because we learned in Ava’s Murder Mysteries (DLC6) that the Seer – another Eridian Guardian – has been manipulating people to protect a timeline, however, we also learned that they cannot manipulate Sirens as they have true free will.
The events at the end of Borderlands 3 that lead us into Borderlands 4 have shattered that expected timeline the Seer talked about. Lilith’s actions can be the first step to breaking free.
