IGN interviewed Gearbox President Randy Pitchford in IGN Unfiltered and various topics passed the revue. One of these topics was Overwatch’s effect on Battleborn. While IGN left out a part of the interview that I think is relevant. Randy did mention timing was probably a factor in the success of Battleborn. Activision Blizzard dropped the Overwatch early access on Battleborn’s launch date, which put Gearbox’ game into a different perspective. If Battleborn was just a new IP and didn’t have the comparison it would probably be seen as a good new franchise. Because Randy mentions that developers celebrate if a new IP manages to reach a million units in sales.
