Borderlands 3 DLC 4 Teased

During episode 7 of the Borderlands Show, we got another tease for the 4th story campaign add-on for Borderlands 3. This image confirmed the vague description that Randy Pitchford gave at PAX East.

There is a character that I love and a lot of us love, that is not in Borderlands 3. And we think that the character deserves a showcase. And not just that character, there will be lots of characters, fan favorites, new and old. Basically, the hint that I’ll give you is – and this isn’t locked in stone yet, so don’t crucify me later for changing things as we just are getting started on this – we are going to see what’s like to be inside the head of the wildest psycho we know. – Randy Pitchford

While there wasn’t any additional information mentioned during the Borderlands Show besides that we can expect colors/visuals, gameplay, and audio. We can dissect the image and find some food for speculation.

MEAT MAN VS THE SMALL MAN

An interesting quote came from Sam Winkler, he is one of the main writers at Gearbox Software. His tweet added to the whole split in contrast in the DLC 4 teaser image. “YOU WILL NOT RIP THE MEAT MAN FROM THE SMALL MAN” If it wasn’t clear from the image, the Psycho in the center of the image is Krieg. A playable Vault Hunter from Borderlands 2. He has a split personality, a Psycho on the outside but there is a calm voice on the inside. Not only does the teaser image show a calm and busy color pallet also the environments in both colors reflect that state of mind. Another noteworthy thing is that the calm blue color pallet makes me think of Maya. There are actually EchoLogs in Borderlands 3 that you can find that go more in-depth on the relation between Krieg and Maya. The calm blue side of Krieg could therefore also refect what Maya saw in him.

Worlds Apart

These 2 personalities inside Krieg are worlds apart but what if this is also reflected in the level design. With the 3rd story campaign add-on we are already getting a narrator. But what if the level design changed based on the state of Krieg’s mind. Where we are basically in the same location but the environment in one version is all twisted and the enemies are more gruesome. Maybe if you have the ability to change the state of Krieg’s mind, Gearbox could also add puzzles using that mechanic. A gate could be closed in the calm environment but broken in the Psycho environment. A lever reached in one area but can be in the other. Switching the state of Krieg lets you solve the puzzle, however, combat will lure in the shadows. I think this would be very cool but also daunting for development.
