Update – May 23, 2018
It was mentioned in the latest Take-Two earnings report that Borderlands 3 is pushed back to the next fiscal year. Previously the game was set to be released in Fiscal 2019, however, currently, it’s set to be released in fiscal 2020. This sounds super late but fiscal years run a bit differently from our “normal” years. The setback puts the next Borderlands somewhere between April 1, 2019, till March 31, 2020. Previously we expected the game to be released somewhere around February 2019. If the game gets an additional development time of 3 months it already falls in fiscal 2020, but it sounds worse because of 2020. But current expectations are set for October 2019 because then the game would be released in the same month as the previous installments in the franchise. On a positive note; this extended wait will provide additional development time. During this time Gearbox could polish the game even further, iterate features, or even include more content.
The highly-anticipated title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises, which had been planned for release during the current fiscal year, is now planned for launch during fiscal 2020 to allow for additional development time. We remain as excited as ever about this title, and expect it to enhance our results next fiscal year.
Take-Two Earnings Report
While these reports are currently mysteriously mentioning ‘a highly-anticipated title from 2K’ we know that a new Borderlands is in development. This was even stated in a previous investor call that 2K is working with Gearbox on a new Borderlands game.
Update – November 9, 2017
In a recent earnings report of Take-Two Interactive, they once again confirmed that a highly anticipated game from 2K games will release in fiscal 2019. Meaning the game would fall between April 1, 2018, and March 31, 2019. This potentially could be Borderlands 3, another big 2K franchise could be Bioshock we haven’t heard any hints about that game. While we have had a lot of hints towards the next Borderlands game.
“Looking ahead, we expect fiscal 2019 to be a record year for Net Bookings and net cash provided by operating activities led by the upcoming launches of Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 and a highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement as part of the earnings report.

There is some speculation going on about the most recent financial report of Take-Two, which is the parent company of Rockstar Games & 2K Games. In this report, it is mentioned that an unannounced big 2K title will be released in the next fiscal year.
Looking ahead to fiscal 2019, we expect to deliver both record Net Sales and record net cash provided by operating activities, in excess of $2.5 billion and $700 million, respectively, led by the launches of Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 and a highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises.”
Take-Two
A lot of people are betting on the next installment in the Borderlands franchise. Gearbox already did a semi-announcement and mentioned that the next Borderlands is in production. Earlier this year Randy Pitchford even showed off a Borderlands 3 Tech Demo. However, it’s possible that this is something completely different because the big 2K franchise could just be a Bioshock, a game from which we haven’t heard in a while. So we will have to wait and see what fiscal 2019 will bring us. E3 and Gamescom are right around the corner so hopefully marketing kicks off and we can set our calendar for somewhere between April 2018 to March 2019.
