What We Know About Redfall
Redfall is a new game by Arkane Studios, the developers behind Dishonored and Prey. It’s a story-driven FPS that you can play the game solo or co-op with up to 4 players. There are four heroes to choose from and they all have their own unique personalities, skills, and abilities. Redfall is an open-world game that takes place in a small town that is overtaken by vampires. It is up to you to investigate the source and restore the town to its former glory.
This all sounds a lot like some of the core Borderlands concepts, however, Redfall isn’t a “Leroy Jenkins” type of game where you mindlessly run into combat. There are stealth elements in the game, something you will rely more on when playing solo than when you play with a team.
Redfall has that Arkane DNA to it where enemies can hear you and follow you around. The world is built upon systems rather than scripted events. This lets you approach the game you want and the game will react to your actions.
What is the Story of Redfall
The story starts with these entrepreneurs that set up shop on the island. As they were conducting research into life expansion, things didn’t go as planned and the researchers managed to turn themselves into vampires.
These predatory monsters slowly turned the once-peaceful town of Redfall into their own personal playground, as they blocked out the sun and pushed the water away from the island.
Who Are The Heroes
There are 4 playable characters in Redfall each with their own personality and abilties. Some come from the island others don’t so you have those different perspectives.
- Devinder Crousley is a cryptozoologist and aspiring inventor. He is armed with some homemade weapons and he is on a mission to prove himself. Dev can throw javelins that can shock enemies, a UV emitter that stuns Vampires, and a portal device to teleport around.
- Jacob Boyer is an ex-military sharpshooter turned private contractor. Strange happenings on Redfall have left him with a mysterious vampiric eye and a spectral raven that’s never far from his side. Jacob can use his pet Raven to scout the area, cloak himself to stay undetected by his enemies, and snipe them from afar.
- Layla Ellison is a biomedical engineering student who interned at a research facility, where something went very wrong, leaving her with intense telekinetic abilities. Layla can project a big shield that protects anyone behind it from incoming projectiles. She can also create a telekinetic elevator to gain access to new heights.
- Remi de la Rosa is a brilliant combat engineer who has spent her life on the front lines. With the help of her robot cohort, Bribón, she’s determined to help rescue Redfall’s survivors. Remi can utilize her robot companion in battle but she can also sticky bombs.
What Does The Gameplay Look Like
Redfall is an open-world game that is designed to be explored on foot. Arkane Studios has put a lot of detail into environmental storytelling. You will be able to find ammunition and gear that way. However, who you encounter during your quest can all depend on the time of day. Vampires will be more prominent during the night and if the fog settles in, your sniper skills need to make room for more close-quarters combat that keeps you on your toes.
Every hero in Redfall has three unique special abilities that you can upgrade in their skill tree. There is one skill tree for each ability plus one additional tree where you can upgrade other abilities like having more health or the ability to carry more items.
You will find a wide variety of weapons throughout your adventure. There are your high-tech military arsenal, kitbashed civilian weapons, and anti-vampire weapons. They are available in various rarities and can have different attachments.
While you are slaying Vampires you can use their powers against them as they can drop Remnants. These are magical items that you can equip onto your character and enhance their abilities.
My Thoughts About Redfall
I can see some overlap with games like Borderlands that I have been covering here on the site. However, I think Redfall will offer a unique experience that you don’t get out of a Borderlands game.
Borderlands isn’t really open-world, Redfall is. The Safe House Missions kinda sound like the control points in games like Assassin’s Creed, by taking control over the building you claim a part of the town back.
We still need to learn more about the Skill Trees, they look more straightforward than Borderlands. They appear to be more like upgrades to a specific “Action Skill” rather than having synergy with a skill in a different skill tree. That said, if you max out a skill tree, that ability can also enhance your co-op buddy. For example, when Jacob upgrades his Cloaking ability all the way, your teammates can also become invisible.
Arkane Studios has delivered quality games in the past with Dishonored and Prey. I think Redfall can offer a great experience. I’m curious how the End-Game content holds up. There are Nests, procedurally generated environments where you can find powerful Remnants for your character build.
I’m excited to see what the game brings to the table when Redfall releases in 2023 on Xbox, PC, and Cloud.
