A while back David Eddings, the original voice actor for claptrap, left Gearbox Software. The story back then suggested that David’s departure wasn’t on the best of terms. Borderlands fans were concerned about who would voice the iconic character or if he would have a voice at all. During the Nerdvana podcast, Randy Pitchford did mention that he would pitch the role to David Eddings to see if he is up for it.
Randy Pitchford did also mention that they have had to hire another voice actor to do the voice for Claptrap in the past. Replacing David Eddings was done when he wasn’t able to do a recording session because of the flu or some other reason. During PAX Gearbox did do a borderlands sketch on stage that did involve another voice actor doing the voice of claptrap. No one noticed until the second time they performed it at another PAX convention when the news about David Eddings broke.
Personally, I didn’t notice that gearbox hired another voice actor for the claptrap lines. But then again I haven’t been playing Borderlands 2 for 5 years like some of you hardcore fans out there. But what are your thoughts about this, let me know in the comments below.
David Eddings is currently working at Rooster Teeth as the head of game publishing. Here he helps young indie developers publish their games.
For the release of Borderlands 2 VR, Gearbox Software hired a new voice actor for the new claptrap lines. Several new dialogues needed to be recorded to introduce you to the Virtual Reality mechanics in the game. Jim Foronda, the new claptrap voice actor does a great job mimicking the original voice actor making it very hard for me to differentiate the two from each other.
