There are 12 different Valorplates in Godfall that you can unlock. Because this is a loot-driven game, you need to collect the appropriate resources to obtain these armor sets.
They are not locked behind specific checkpoints within the game.
You will be able to unlock them in any order you like. However, each Valorplate has its own requirements. Therefore, you might be able to obtain some armor sets quicker than others. But if you really want that one specific Valorplate then you can keep hoarding those resources until you can unlock it.

Valorplate Recources
You can obtain Valorplate Cores by simply playing the game. You can get them as a reward for completing a mission but you can also loot them from fallen heroes throughout a mission.

You can obtain Infused Jasper in the Earth Realm
You can obtain Orbs of Oblivion by completing Dreamstone mission
